FLORENCE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A huge, destructive fire quickly ripped through a house on South Enoch Grove Road near Florence.

Authorities say the husband and wife who own the home woke up to a loud popping sound around 3:45 a.m. They spotted fire in their carport and quickly escaped safely from the house. The homeowner's children were not home when the fire started.

Brian Grantham with Rankin County Emergency Operations says the cause of the fire isn't confirmed, but he has this safety advice to keep everyone more safe in the winter.
"A lot of times we have the space heaters that are unattended, you know embers from a fireplace that may not have been fully extinguished. So I just want to remind everyone to keep an eye on those things when its such cold weather like this," says Grantham, the EMS Coordinator for Rankin County Emergency Operations.

Grantham says the home was built out of logs, which helped fuel the fire more.
