FLASHBACK to JANUARY 19, 1994: Primos Cafe, a State Street fixture since 1948, goes up in flames in an early-morning fire. Eventually, investigators determined that built-up lint in an air vent had caused the fire.

The State Street location was one of several restaurants operated by the Primos family over the years. Prominent people could often be found dining in the cafe's old booths amid its art-deco architecture. On any given day, one could find businessmen, mayors, or even former governors eating there.

The State Street store was never rebuilt, and the neighboring Odom's Optical building burned about a year later. McDonald's now occupies the property.

Primos Northgate continued to operate farther north on State Street until it closed in 2001. It reopened in Flowood as Primos Cafe shortly thereafter, and a similar store later opened in Ridgeland.
