JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Imagine a self-sustaining village in West Jackson run by its residents.

A grass-roots environmental group hopes to eventually see that happen.

The "Our Power Plan" group says the Obama Administration's Clean Power Plan doesn't go far enough to reduce carbon pollution or take action on climate change. Group members hope to encourage Mississippians to take charge and demand more.

"Within less than 6 miles, many of our communities, low income population, vulnerable, people of color communities, are always affected or directly impacted by toxic poisoning of the environment," says activist Dr. Charlotte Keys. "It is in the plan of God for all communities to have green, clean, healthy, safe and sustainable communities, and when I look at our communities at large most of them look like third world country."

The group envisions the West Jackson village to provide affordable housing and jobs through cooperatives.
