Chef brings 'Creativity Kitchen' to Blackburn Middle School

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

They kids and staff are eating well at Blackburn Middle School in Jackson.

Restaurateur Jeff Good and JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray pile their plates high on Monday morning. Mississippi Museum of Art Chef Nick Wallace, a Blackburn alum, has brought his skills to the school.

"Just the giving back part. You really want to make that reflection happen just so it can flood everywhere," he says.

Every Monday, Chef Wallace will bring his creative menu to Blackburn and Powell Middle Schools. First up on the rotating menu will be southern Italian cuisine, like spaghetti and meatballs and healthy pizza.

"My favorite was the pizza, the vegetable pizza," says Powell Middle School student D'arius Gross.

Healthy eating is one of the goals of this new program, called 'Creativity Kitchen: Chef Inspired Cuisine for Healthy Scholars'. Chef Wallace, who also mentors children, says Mississippi has a reputation for unhealthy food choices, but it doesn't have to be that way.

"It's really important for us to get back in touch our roots, and that's living that farm life, fresh vegetables," he says.

"Now lunch is tastier, and kids want to eat it more," says Powell Middle School student Lonnie Bennett.
