BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

For more than a year, crews have worked on the I-20 Brandon exit and in the process, transforming a section of West Government Street into something many drivers call treacherous at rush hour.

Now, all that headache may be over in a matter of months, but some say they'll believe it when they see it.

If there's one constant in the metro at rush hour, it's traffic.

In Brandon, that problem's multiplied on West Government Street. Instead of four lanes, you've got two, thanks to construction on a new exit ramp for I-20.

"I just get frustrated and I say, you know, I need to go another route. You know, it's just too inconvenient," said Earnestine Hill.

For Hill, that route involves driving past all the road work and taking Highway 80 to Highway 18, effectively bypassing the progress that's already taken over a year to build.

That detour's not as short as it sounds.

"It's gonna add at least 20 to 30 minutes," said Hill. "You know, you'll have to move, look fast and look quick, or get up earlier to do what you need to do. It's too much traffic."

Still, others said they're optimistic about the new ramps.

"It just depends on like, what the time frame is," said Vontari Rogers. "I'm sure everybody wants to know when it's gonna be complete. I'm sure when it's complete, everybody's gonna be happy, satisfied."

MDOT spokesperson Morgan Miller said the project is expected to be completed by the end of June, meaning it's right on schedule. It couldn't come soon enough for Hill.

"It's so inconvenient for everybody, not only me but a lot of people, and they just so slow about doing what they need to do," said Hill said. "So many accidents. I almost had an accident because people, they pull out in front of you. They rush it and rush it."
