FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A lane shift could create a challenge for commuters and shoppers in the Dogwood mall area in the coming weeks. Many motorists who drive that stretch are well aware of the increase of orange barrels in the area.

Drive on Lakeland drive east of Airport road and what you see is a short shoulder and then a steep drop off.  It's part of a lane shift in the construction zone, where they are demolishing an old railroad bridge.

"It's real dangerous because that's a deep slope down there and a lot of people not paying attention with their digital devices phones like that, not paying attention they could easily run somebody off the road," said Clay Sales.

MDOT officials are asking motorists do just that, pay attention!   And also slow down.  The speed limit has been reduced to 35 miles an hour in the lane shift zone.

Not all motorists are being discouraged.

"This is the first day I've driven down Lakeland and it didn't bother me a bit," said Jo Haynes. "I'm happy to see improvements."

Navigating this area could become more challenging during peak traffic.

There's no indication from MDOT officials how long the lane shift will last. They say it's just temporary while they make improvements to this highly traveled metro area.

Collin Owens said,
"Very busy, always a lot of traffic on Lakeland anyways," said Collin Owens. "Hopefully they can get it fixed and people can get to work and back home safely."

Wednesday, MDOT released a statement saying they have not received any complaints about this area.  If motorists follow the traffic control devices and drive buckled up and distraction free, they will travel through the work zone safely.
