FLASHBACK to JANUARY 28, 2005: The building that housed the historic Subway Lounge in its basement is demolished to make way for a new road project.

Blues enthusiasts and performers from all over the country had spent many a night jamming in the Subway in the basement of the Summers Hotel. The lounge kept operating long after the hotel went out of business, and it was even featured in an HBO documentary about juke joints.

The building was barely standing, however, and it was eventually cleared to make way for the Jackson Metro Parkway. Today, many drivers have no idea they are riding over what was once hallowed ground for blues lovers and artists alike.
