Prepare now for severe weather

Emergency officials say preparation is key to staying safe. You need to know where you're going to take cover if you're at home, at school, at work, or out running errands. If you're home and there's a tornado warning move to the center of the house. Do what you can to protect your head with a helmet or your arms. If you live in a mobile home, you should get out and find a more sturdy building for shelter. Try to stay off the roads. A vehicle is not safe shelter during a storm.

"An automobile is the absolute worst place people can be when a storm comes through. All too often people think that it is safe and that they can out run a storm and they realize too late that they can't do that so minimize travel or understand when the system is going to come through and just stay in a sturdy place until the storm passes," says Lee Smithson, the Executive Director of MEMA.

To stay on guard, consider getting a NOAA weather radio and download the First Alert Weather app on your smart phone.
