JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police are on the hunt for the people who were inside two separate vehicles that crashed in a south Jackson neighborhood Monday evening.

There were reports of gunfire along a street off McDowell Road moments before two cars raced through the streets and crashed.

"They got out and ran is all I know," said Maria Drive resident Billy Poland.

The south Jackson man was inside his home in the 1300 block of Maria Drive when sometime after five o'clock he heard a loud crash. He went outside to find an abandoned blue green Chevy Impala had slammed into his sister-in-law's Ford mini van that was parked in the driveway.

It was abandoned, doors opened with front end damage, bullet holes in the rear, a shattered windshield and deployed passenger side airbag.

And just down the street a silver Honda Accord was also wrecked in a yard and left empty.

"I heard the accident yes. I mean heard them hit the cars, and I heard the wreck," said Poland. "My buddy saw some people running. I don't know. He said two or three in one and two or three in the other."

Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green said shots were exchanged between the Chevy and Honda. According to Green, police are also investigating a shooting into an occupied dwelling nearby at 1330 Maria Drive.

No injuries were reported, but the gunfire and crashes are believed to be related.

When Precinct One officers arrived the occupants in both vehicles had fled the scene.

Residents in the area reported hearing gunfire.

"I didn't hear them, but they said there were gunshots back behind us," added Poland.

The two vehicles were searched by officers.

Both had Hinds County license plates and were towed from the scene.
