JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Students at Tougaloo College collected over 60 thousand bottles of water for residents of Flint, Michigan.  Organizers say the donations rolled in from churches and organizations throughout the community.

Students loaded the water into an 18-wheeler truck parked on the college campus Wednesday morning.

The City of Flint is under a public health emergency after it was discovered the water was tainted with lead.

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver is a graduate of Tougaloo College.

"Wherever we are in this world, we will all stand together," said Tougaloo College President Dr. Beverly Wade Hogan. "Mayor Weaver is leading a tremendous charge there to provide clean water to the residents and we here at Tougaloo are helping to support that."

Hogan says the goal was to collect 60 thousand bottles of water, but they collected 120,000 bottles, too much for one truck to carry. They are asking for help to transport the additional water.

The water is expected to arrive in Flint by Friday.
