YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Residents of Yazoo County driving along Highway 3, are seeing a high number of dead deer along the roadside this month.

"We have just come off a recent flood event in the south delta.  Deer are moving back from the higher ground back to the normal habitats," said Wildlife Bureau Director Chad Dacus. "But also this is something that's not uncommon this time of year."

Game officers are inspecting the deer and have found no signs they were shot. Wildlife officials say State Farm Insurance tabulated 22,373 deer vehicle collisions last year.

Residents are still urged to report large numbers of deer kills to wildlife officials. But in this case, it's man who decided the fate of these deer.

Motorists are being urged to pay special attention to avoid wrecks or injury in heavily populated areas.

"They need to slow down," added Dacus. "If they're driving at dusk, they need to really pay attention, and give some distance with that vehicle in front of you."
