COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Several residents in the Strong Hope community in Copiah county witnessed what they say was a strong tornado as it tore through their community, snapping trees and throwing debris.

Metal roofing torn from homes and barns was tossed across fields. Tree branches were down, blocking access to many roads for a good portion of the day.

"I saw debris flying, limbs trees and everything else blowing around," said Oscar Foster. "I had to stop at the church, wait about a mile up the road then when the storm broke I got a quarter mile from my house, I couldn't get no further."

Kimberly Lusk was on her front porch when she saw the twister bearing down on her family home.

"I grabbed my dogs, my husband," said Lusk. And I just grabbed them and we went in the hall closet. I said God, if it's your will and it turned as I was saying it."

The twister missed Kimberly's House. Two other homes on Sandhill road were destroyed by the twister.

One is owned by Strong Hope fire chief Sammy Moore.  He and his wife survived the storm along with neighbors, who also lost their home.

Numerous homes had roof damage.  Residents worked into the dark, placing blue tarps on them, after leaks and holes in the shingles were discovered.

Amazingly no injuries were reported.
