Changes for Charter Schools possible in Mississippi

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Saying higher-achieving school districts should share the burden of charter schools with struggling districts, a Jackson Democrat is persuading a House committee to allow charter schools everywhere.
The House Education Committee amended House Bill 1044 Wednesday to say the schools could locate in districts with any academic rating.
The bill originally allowed students anywhere in Mississippi to attend charter schools, but kept the requirement that school boards in districts rated A to C could veto charter schools in their districts.
That location restriction was a key compromise that allowed House leaders to win enough votes to pass the original charter school law in 2013.
The Senate Education Committee passed Senate Bill 2161 Tuesday allowing students to cross district lines and allowing schools to locate in C-rated districts without local approval.
