GREENVILLE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Washington School in Greenville is grieving the loss of 13-year-old Cheyanne Hicks who died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson from the flu and flu-pneumonia.

The girl's death has been confirmed by the Mississippi State Department of Health as the first pediatric flu death this year.

A teacher at the school says that the student, Cheyanne Hicks, was sent home from class yesterday when she began feeling ill.

She was then taken to Delta Regional Medical Center and transferred to UMMC, where she later died.

The 7th grader's death has prompted Washington School to shut down until at least Wednesday as a precautionary measure recommended from an infectious disease physician.

Officials say that UMMC will be doing a special test, molecular testing, which will identify and isolate the flu virus and then tell them which strain Hicks died from.

Hicks was the daughter of Jimmy and Jarae Hicks. Jimmy Hicks is Washington School's middle school physical education coach, assistant varsity basketball coach and assistant varsity and junior varsity basketball coach.
