JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

As the severe weather threat gets closer to the Magnolia State emergency leaders at MEMA warn you to have a plan in place now.

Part of your plan should include staying off the road and out of mobile homes if there's a tornado in the area.

If you're in a sturdy building during a tornado, get to the lowest level and take shelter in an inner hallway or smaller room without windows. MEMA's Executive Director Lee Smithson also advises you to be aware of what type of weather is headed your direction.

"We do that by encouraging people to have a NOAA weather radio. An app on their phone, of course yours (the First Alert Weather App) is probably the best app that alerts people as soon as weather breaks out in their area," says Smithson.

Also, if you leave home make sure you have medicines, a phone charger, a flashlight, and any other essentials you might need to stay healthy and keep going after the storm.
