MADD calls on lawmakers to strengthen drunk driving laws

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will be at the Capitol on Tuesday and Wednesday to call on the Legislature to improve drunk driving laws in Mississippi.

MADD will announce findings of a recent report that shows ignition interlocks have prevented 2,835 drunk driving attempts in this state in just one year since all-offender ignition interlock laws were enacted in Mississippi. MADD plans to urge lawmakers to advance legislation to help boost interlock installations for DUI offenders and will urge lawmakers to ensure a statewide database is created so courts can have access to drunk driving records across local jurisdictions.

MADD will be at the Capitol Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. near the Capitol Press Room.  The group says they believe strong ignition interlock laws and laws that will keep repeat offenders off the road are critical to reaching their goal of No More Victims.

MADD says recent events have shown that in Mississippi and across the nation, more must be done to prevent this 100 percent preventable crime.
