Flyer from apartment management asks tenants to boil water amid lead concerns

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A flyer started circulating a few days ago at Tracewood Apartments in Jackson, telling residents how they can get rid of possible lead in their water. Experts say the method is wrong and could make the water even worse.

The flyer has several at the apartment complex concerned.

"[A tenant] brought the flyer to my attention," said Madison resident Brian Heffner. "She's not native speaking English, and didn't understand the ramifications of what it meant."

It states the city of Jackson issued a boil water alert effective immediately because of that possible lead.

"I translated it into Spanish [for her] and I said, 'But you can't boil the water and make it safer,'" said Heffner.

The Centers for Disease Control said heating or boiling water will not remove lead. In fact, it can actually increase the concentration in the water because the lead doesn't evaporate.

"If the city of Jackson had sent word to apartment complexes such as that, it would be in a press release type of language," said Heffner.

City spokesperson Shelia Byrd said the information in that flyer was not issued by the city.

A leasing agent who works at Tracewood confirmed they made the flyer, but declined an on-camera interview because it's against the company's policy.

The agent said management told her to put the flyers out there even though tenants told her the information was incorrect.

"It's just, to me, a gross error, and now there are hundreds of people in that apartment complex that are misinformed," added Heffner.

3 On Your Side reached out to the owner of Tracewood Apartments, StoneRiver Property Management, but they have not yet responded.

Jackson city council members will hold a special meeting Tuesday to decide whether to issue a civil emergency over the city's water supply.

Jackson must reduce lead and cooper levels in all residential water.
