This week in Mississippi: Diabetes Discovery Week

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi has designated this week as Diabetes Discovery Week.

During the week all Mississippians are asked to assess their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by taking a risk test.

The group is emphasizing that diabetes does not affect adults alone, children are also at risk.

The Foundation is hoping to make more people aware of the warning signs of type 1 diabetes in children.

Early diagnosis of type 1 diabetes reduces the chance of diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition from undiagnosed diabetes.

Dr. Rick Carlton, Board President for the Diabetes Foundation says over 800,000 Mississippians are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and another 115,000 people in this state have diabetes and don't know it.

A ling to the risk test can be found on the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi webpage: https://www.msdiabetes.org/news/2016/03/11/diabetes-discovery-week
