JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Mississippi State star recruit is facing criminal charges after he was caught on video repeatedly punching a woman. Noxubee County player, Jeffery Simmons, a US Army All American player, was arrested in Macon.

In cellphone video, the five star recruit is seen throwing blow after blow to the head of a woman on the ground at a Macon apartment complex. The altercation occurred Thursday and appeared on the internet Sunday.

The Macon Police Department has filed disturbing the peace charges against Simmons and four others, including Sophia Taylor, the woman Simmons is shown striking in the video.

Most reacted with shock and disbelief to the video of the highly recruited star athlete's actions.

"I just think no male should put their hands on females at all," said Jackson resident Danielle Mickens. "By him being an athlete he should get additional charges, but I don't think he should have put his hands on her at all".

The Commercial Dispatch reports Taylor is in the process of filing a simple assault affidavit against Simmons.

"Disturbing the peace is certainly not a fair call because he's videotaped hitting a woman," said Randall Williams of Jackson. "So it's not disturbing the peace. Disturbing the peace would be like being too rowdy or something like that."

"That's terrible. I don't think they should be able to play. Is he in jail? It's a terrible message," said Nicole Quinto of Pearl.

The Columbus newspaper also reports that Simmons apologized to Taylor in a post on his Facebook page which has been removed.

"I take full responsibility for my actions that occurred on Thursday evening", Simmons wrote.

It indicated that he was defending his family but said it was out of character for him.

"I don't think that's the kind of representation that our kids and college students need to be having coming out of school," said Missy Fowler of Madison.

Scott Sanders of Jackson saw video of Simmons fighting on the internet this weekend.

"I'm actually surprised that at the way the young athletes are behaving and really disappointed in these five star athletes and what they've been allowed to do  and what these programs are allowing to happen within the program," said Sanders.

"We are aware of the situation. As more details become available, we will continue to evaluate the situation," said Bill Martin with Mississippi State Athletics.
