The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) celebrated its centennial Tuesday with the burial of a time capsule and a special ceremony outside MDOT's administration building in Jackson.
The capsule will be preserved for 50 years. It includes items that will give future generations a snapshot of what MDOT and the state of Mississippi looks like today.
The ceremony also included reflections from the past century of transportation history in Mississippi.
The State Legislature created the Mississippi State Highway Commission on March 29, 1916.
In 1992, the State Highway Commission and Highway Department were reorganized into the Mississippi Department of Transportation which is governed by the Mississippi Transportation Commission.
For the past century, MDOT has been responsible for creating, maintaining and preserving the state transportation system.
"Those that came before us did an unbelievable job building the system that we have," said Dick Hall, Central MS Transportation Commissioner. "Now we've got to figure out a way to maintain this system and bring it back up to where it needs to be."
