JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Derrick Johnson for capital murder. He confessed to killing a security guard during a gas station robbery in 2011 and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

On appeal, Johnson argues that the trial judge erred by refusing to allow him to cross-examine a former Jackson Police Department detective. one of two detectives to whom he confessed, about allegations that the detective had accepted bribes in unrelated cases. The appeals court affirmed Johnson's conviction and sentence.

Fifty-four- year-old James McKinney was killed in the attempted robbery in July of 2011. He was working security at the gas station, and was shot trying to protect the store clerk, who was shot in the leg.
