JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The wives of a state lawmaker and county constable were arrested in the Belk Department store in Northpark Mall for shoplifting. Thirty six year old Amanda Vance Miles of Forest and 49 year old Sheri Prestage of Morton were caught with more than $2,000.00 in jewelry.

Miles is the wife of District 75 State Representative Tom Miles who represents Rankin and Scott Counties. Prestage is the wife of Scott County Constable Richard Prestage.

"The information we're getting from our loss prevention in Northpark was that they received a call from the loss prevention at the Flowood store indicating that these two ladies with this clothing description had stolen some merchandise from their store," said Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal. "They weren't able to apprehend them. They were just putting our store on notice, just in case they showed up."

Miles had more than $200 worth of jewelry in her purse.

Prestage was found with more than $1,900 in jewelry in her purse and much more.

"Miss Nutt (Prestage) was searched more thoroughly by a female officer and we found some small quantities of hydrocodone that were hidden in her undergarments," added Neal.

"This is a most unfortunate situation for our family. It will be properly handled through our court system,' said Representative Tom Miles in a statement.

We were unable to reach Constable Prestage for comment.

"What these ladies were stealing this jewelry for we don't have any idea," added the chief.

Miles is charged with misdemeanor shoplifting. Prestage faces charges of felony shoplifting and possession of a controlled substance.

Both women bonded out in Ridgeland and were turned over to Flowood Police.
