Telemarketers banned from calling cell phones

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Fed up with unwanted cell phone calls from telemarketers?  All of that is about to change.

The legislature passed a bill amending the Mississippi Telephone Solicitation Act of 2003.

It's taken 13 long years to get this law passed.

Lawmakers turned a deaf ear to these unwanted solicitations year after year. This even though most Mississippians now use cell phones and not house phones.

PSC Commissioner Brandon Presley talked with us Thursday saying, "Technology has changed to much so cell phones are now the prevalent use of telecommunications.

Mississippi ranks first in the country in cell phone only households.

The State Attorney General Jim Hood says, passage of the bill is a victory for Mississippi consumers who are tired of picking up their cell phones only to learn an out-of-state telemarketer on the other end of the line trying to sell you something.

The new law goes into effect July 1st.
