Airport bill protest at State Capitol

A protest broke out at the Mississippi Capitol against a bill that would expand the Jackson airport board and against Confederate symbols used by the state.

About two dozen people chanted loudly in the Capitol rotunda Monday afternoon - "No airport, no peace!" and "Hey, hey, ho, ho. Confederate Spring has got to go!"

An organizer, Cheryl Nannette, says the demonstrators are with a grassroots group called Corporation Jackson. She says they were protesting the Confederate battle emblem in the Mississippi flag and Republican Gov. Phil Bryant's proclamation of April as Confederate Heritage Month.

The airport bill proposes adding board members from majority-white suburban counties to oversee Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport. The airport board is currently appointed by the mayor of the majority-black capital city.
