JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson tops the list as one of the most challenging places to live with spring allergies in 2016. That is according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

More than 50 million Americans have seasonal allergies and doctors said the pollen problem is just now getting bad.

"Headache, head pressure, sinus pressure, and ear pressure," said Dr. Michael Dew.

Doctor Dew said 20 percent of the patients he has seen in the past couple of days have had these symptoms due to the increased amount of pollen in the metro area.

"Allergies can back up into bacterial infections and ear infections as well," added Dr. Dew.

The problem will get worse before it gets better. Dr. Dew said April is projected to be the worst month during this allergy season.

"There are some daily antihistamines you can take like Zyrtec, Claritin, or Allegra," said the doctor. "You can get all of those over the counter now. You can take those on a daily basis to help prevent allergy symptoms."

Dr. Dew said the key to allowing over the counter medication to be effective is consistency.

"A lot of times people will get on them for a week and they will feel better and then they feel like the don't need it anymore." he said. "So, the thought is man, I am feeling okay that means the medicine is working. You need to continue it for at least the next several weeks."

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, not only does Jackson top the charts for the number one place to live with spring allergies, it also tops the 2016 rankings regionally.

Tree pollen and warm weather create most of the problems. You will begin to see relief when rain is in the forecast or towards the end of spring.
