JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A man is behind bars after a fight outside the University of Mississippi Medical Center led to an early morning police chase on Friday.

The pursuit ended in an accident on Woodrow Wilson Avenue. UMMC Police Chief Michael Stamps says the man got into a fight with a woman outside the critical care hospital. He used his fist to hit a witness who tried to stop the fight.

When police arrived, he sped off in a truck, hitting a patrol car as police pursued him. When he crashed, police noticed he had a weapon. The man put it down before trying to run, but he was soon captured.

"On this campus we have a zero tolerance for criminal activity and I hope that this suspect and any other person who wants to try the same type of criminal activity, the message we want to send is that when you come to our campus we're going to protect it and we're going to pursue you if it's justifiable," says Chief Stamps.

After being treated at the hospital, the man was taken to the Hinds County Detention Center. Charges are pending. The woman involved had minor bruises, but is okay.
