WALTHALL COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Copiah County has been captured who has been on the run for 9 years.

In October of 2007, a Florida man being held in the Copiah County Jail, Sidney Robert Benner escaped.

A manhunt followed for Benner who was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, as well as many other offenses.

That was the second manhunt since August of 2007 for Benner.

He was originally arrested for trying to run over a highway patrolman who stopped him for driving erratically.

After 3 days in the woods, he was finally re-captured.

However, Benner was able to climb the chain link fence and escape from the jail a few days later into a nearby wooded area.

During Benner's escape journey, he was in numerous facilities in Utah and Montana.

When he was in the Montana jail, Sheriff Jones of Copiah County, requested that they release Benner to them once he served him time.

Montana supposedly "missed the memo"

Benner was released by them and was still a wanted man in Copiah County.

Finally, after all this time, Benner was finally caught on April 8, 2016.

He was caught by Knoxville police department and held until Copiah County Sheriff Department could make it there to get him.

He is finally, after 9 years, back in the Copiah County Jail.

Benner appeared in court today and has been charged with felony invasion, aggravated assault of a police officer, and a few other charges.

He waived his indictment and will return to court in May.
