JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting at State Street and Culley Drive, where the suspect was sent to the hospital for his injuries.

Jackson Police Spokesperson, Officer Colendula Green says around 6:20 p.m. Monday night two JPD officers tried to initiate a traffic stop but the driver would not stop the car.

"Once they came in contact with the vehicle the suspect had a high powered weapon that he grabbed. Once he grabbed the weapon that's when officers discharged at the suspect," said Officer Green.

Jackson Police say the man was shot 2 to 3 times, but witnesses say they heard at multiple rounds.

"He was attempting to open his door, when he did, I saw the door open, that's when I saw the shots fired. Like I said, it was 8 to 10 rounds from both cops shooting together," said Antwione Jones, a local bar owner, who witnessed the shooting.

Friends of the unidentified suspect, say he didn't deserve to be shot.

"When they told me that was my partner I could do nothing but shake my head. It hurt me, I seen it all. They gunned him down like he was a dog in the street," said Willie Ford, a friend of the suspect.

Officer Green says the man had a criminal history. The two officers were not injured.

Charges are pending for the man involved.
