JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police are investigating a shooting of a child at Merit Health Central, formerly known as CMMC.

Police say the mother of the child, who was at the hospital for treatment, dropped her purse and the gun discharged.

JPD spokeswoman Colendula Green says the bullet hit a vending machine, then ricocheted and struck the child in the cheek.

The child received treatment at the hospital for the graze wound.

Merit Health Central released this statement following the shooting:

Weapons are prohibited on the campus of all Merit Health facilities to protect the safety of our patients, visitors, physicians and employees. This morning, an isolated incident involving the accidental discharge of a visitor's weapon occurred on our campus. It was addressed quickly, preventing serious harm to the patient and risk to others in the hospital. Because this is an active police investigation, further questions should be directed to the Jackson Police Department.

Police are not sure if the mother will be charged. It is still unclear why she had the weapon.

We will update this story when we get more information.
