JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to begin phase two of the Interstate 55 South Project from McDowell Road to Byram in Hinds County on April 15.

Phase two will reconstruct the median and southbound lanes of Interstate 55. New roadway lighting will be placed in the median, and retaining walls will be constructed between the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 on the frontage road.

Additionally, MDOT will install a new traffic signal at the Byram interchange and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components, such as traffic cameras and dynamic message signs (DMS) along Interstate 55.

“After meeting all deadlines of phase one with James Construction Group, we are ready to begin the final leg of this important project to improve the safety and mobility of the traveling public,” said Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall. “I have full confidence that Yates Construction will complete this project in an efficient and timely manner.”

The contract for phase two of the Interstate 55 South Project was awarded to Yates Construction of Philadelphia, Miss., with a bid of $85 million which is approximately five percent under the state’s estimate. Phase two is expected to be completed late summer 2018.

While the work is being performed, motorists should expect some delays; however, lane closures are restricted during rush hour and holidays.
