The investigation into a child being shot inside a hospital emergency room continues. Thankfully the child only received a grazing wound according to Jackson police.
Police were called to Merit Health Central hospital just before 10 a.m. A child had just been shot inside the emergency room.
"Just one shot, one round, said Officer Colendula Green. "it ricocheted off the vending machine once. It ricocheted off the vending, machine it grazed the 2 year old on the right side of her face. Yes, it's a superficial wound. She's OK. I actually got a chance to see her, she's doing very well."
Police say the child's mother dropped her purse containing the gun, that's when the shot went off. The child was treated in the ER.
"The 2 year old suffered a superficial wound. She's expected to be OK ," added Officer Green.. "We're treating it as an accidental discharge."
There are signs at all the hospital entrances that state weapons of any kind are prohibited on the Merit Health campus. Family members of the child rushed to the hospital looking for answers.
"They won't let us see her, they're saying no one can see her now, only my sister and the daddy," said Renae Robinson. "Yeah it's definitely an accident. My sister wouldn't do nothing to hurt her kids."
