JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was a historic day in the city of Jackson as the ribbon was cut on a brand new state of the art public health laboratory.

The 80-thousand-square-foot facility will now allow the agency to monitor and respond to public health threats in a way that's never been possible before.

Construction on the $36-million-dollar facility began back in 2010. The building was named after the late Dr. Ed Thompson who served as State Health Officer. He was also husband to WLBT reporter Marsha Thompson.

"He made it a point that he was going to get a lab facility that was adequate for testing that was needed," said Dr. Daphne Ware. "He understood that we needed to be ready to test for food outbreaks."

Staff members began moving in the facility earlier this year.
