Jackson Police are investigating a second accidental shooting this week where a child was the victim. This time, it was a 13 year old.

Police Officer Colendula Green said so far, no one had been charged and they are investigating the incident as an accidental shooting.

"Detectives on scene collecting evidence and gathering witness statements," said Officer Green.

Evidence was recovered after Crime Scene Investigators were called to a home on Hillside Drive just off McDowell Road in South Jackson after a handgun was accidentally discharged.

"Preliminary investigations reveal a 16 year old male was in possession of a handgun and the handgun discharged, striking a 13 year old under her armpit," added Green. "She was just grazed by a bullet. Right now she is at an area hospital recovering."

The two are brother and sister. Officer Green said detectives are questioning the two teenagers as well as the adults who were in the home at the time of the incident. Detectives are trying to determine exactly what happened and why the two teens were not at school.

Officer Green said, "We are trying to determine who the gun belonged to," said Officer Green. "At this time it's still in it's preliminary stages."

It is illegal for a minor to be in possession of a firearm. Officer Green said this is the second accidental shooting involving a child Jackson Police are investigating within the past two days.

"It's very concerning to us as far as children being grazed by bullets," she said. "We want to make sure parents are talking to their children about gun safety. Hopefully these incidents won't happen as much as they have been happening."

Jackson Police are trying to determine who the weapon belonged to.
