A brutal attack on an innocent dog posted on social media caught the attention of police and animal rescue organizations. Some said the picture is an example of small breeds being used as bait dogs to train fighters.
One local animal activist speaking out against the animal abuse.
“I think these individuals see animals as nothing more than disposable,” said Leah Thompson.
Thompson runs Madison Ark. It is an organization that rescues and rehabilitates dogs. She was appalled to see the picture posted from someone in Canton that shows an injured animal's head and neck allegedly being used as bait.
“It appeared to be a puppy fed to a larger dog,’ said Thompson.
This is a growing practice that encourages dogs to fight. Thompson said the animals shouldn't be exploited and abused that way and then to be put on display online makes it worse.
“We see with certain communities that dogs are nothing but statues, symbols, and when you have the meanest, baddest dog on the block it says more about you, so it makes me sad,” said Thompson.
After obtaining the photo, we reached out to the Canton Police and the Madison County Sheriff's Department about the graphic image, both are now investigating.
“People in animal rescue world see things like this so frequently, its just becoming another picture sent to us,” added Thompson.
Thompson points out that a lot of the dogs used as bait are given away free online on sites like Craigslist.
"They can do anything they want with them, they are never going to know," said Thompson. Rescues, we keep up with all our adoptions. Please stop putting animals on Craigslist. Not only does it flood the shelters, it really puts the animal in harm's way.”
