JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A south Jackson resident was shocked recently when he opened his water bill. The grand total, $5,411.25."

"I've heard of it happening everywhere, but If I hadn't heard about it sure I'd been scared to death," said Kenneth Tew.

Tew says his bi monthly bill is usually about $90. He joins a list of Jackson water customers who have received the astronomically high bills in recent months, after the city installed new water meters, and went to a new billing system.

"I don't know what to do I called them, they said they're investigating," added Tew. "We won't cut you off we'll check on it. Thats all you hear every month.  I've called them every month telling them I haven't received a bill."

City officials say they've had some glitches with the new billing system.

"If someone gets an absurdly high water bill, they should contact the customer care billing so we can get that worked out and it could be the result of a glitch," said city of Jackson spokesperson Shelia Byrd.

To correct the problem, the city is moving to a new billing method, using exact water usage amounts and not estimates, giving cutomers more accurate amounts, and avoiding the scare they get when they see a comma in their bills.
