BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A major fundraiser for a south Jackson private  school was held Saturday with lots of  exercise based activities.

The event to benefit Hillcrest Christian School began in the morning with a 5k color run and kids fun run.

Colors of the rainbow cascaded onto runners and walkers putting one foot in front of the other to support Hillcrest Christian School Saturday in Byram.

Hundreds took to the course at the Byram Parkway at The Gym.

Color bombing along the route was the order of the day during the fundraiser.

In January a concerned parent emailed us sharing that they were told during a meeting that the private school had financial problems and needed over $100,000.00 to stay open through the end of the year.

Officials said the school was not closing and plays a vital role in the community.

Residents and alumni came out to assist  the school.

"Just because of my love for the school and the desire to have christian education in the Byram community. We're real excited to have the fundraiser, and it will be an annual event," said Hillcrest supporter Tammy Foster.

The day devoted to fitness and fund raising also included a weight lifting competition with three categories.

"We're doing a dead lift, bench press and squats. This is our first annual weightlifting competition and we hope to make this an annual event because the winners this year need to come back and defend their title next year," said personal trainer Cara Glenn.

"Spin-a-thon, karaoke, space jumps, laser tag, fun all day," said Amy Myers owner of The Gym when listing some of the family friendly activities.

Hillcrest Christian School was established in 1971 and serves students K-3 through 12th grade.
