Register for Children's Mental Health Summit

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi Children’s Home Services (MCHS) will be hosting the Third Annual Children’s Mental Health Summit on Friday, May 6 at the Jackson Hilton.

With one in five children suffering from a mental disorder, children’s mental health affects all Mississippians. Today, children and youth are facing challenges and problems that take many forms. Children who experience trauma are 2.5 times more likely to have to repeat a year of school, to have chronic health issues such as asthma or obesity, and to be diagnosed with ADHD.

The 2016 Mississippi Children’s Mental Health Summit, #THRIVING Promoting Resilience in Children, will provide insight to professionals working with children on how to support them through trauma and teach resiliency. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from evidence based practices and real world solutions to help Mississippi’s children, youth and families thrive.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, David Chandler, Executive Director, Division of Family and Children’s Services, and Christine James-Brown, President/CEO of the Child Welfare League of America, will provide participant updates on current issues, priorities and measures being taken to address the growing needs for children and families in Mississippi.

National speaker Terry Morris will share how teachers, counselors and foster families used their influence to build resilience in his life.  Breakout sessions will be available to participants on varied topics addressing issues children and families face.

Individuals can register by visiting www.helpkidsthrive.org. There is a $50 registration fee.  For additional information, please contact 601.352.7784.
