STAR students to be recognized in Jackson

More than 500 STAR Students and their STAR Teachers will be recognized at the 2016 Education Celebration Thursday at the Jackson Convention Complex. The ceremony sponsored by the MEC's M.B. Swayze Foundation will be held in conjunction with Mississippi Economic Council's 67th Annual meeting.

STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence, grade point average and a minimum of 25 on the American College Test or ACT.  Each STAR Student is asked to choose a STAR Teacher, the teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student's scholastic achievement.

The highlight of the event will be the naming of the Mississippi ALL-STAR Student for 2015-2016. That student will receive a $24,000 Cook Foundation scholarship sponsored by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of scholarships presented to STAR Students and STAR Teachers. Over $1,000,000 has been awarded to students through scholarships provided by the foundation.
