BBB warns about phony phone book invoices

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Better Business Bureau wants to warn you about phony phone book cons trying to fool business owners out of their money.

People pretending to represent "The Yellow Pages" have sent out numerous invoices to businesses across Mississippi. A fake company called "Yellow Pages Inc." demands about $500 for supposed overdue advertising fees. The invoice indicates the file will be sent to a debt collector if it's not paid.

"Before you pay any sort of bill make sure you actually owe the money. Make sure it is the proper name. This is a play on words. This is saying Yellow Pages Inc. This is not the real Yellow Pages," says John O'Hara, the CEO for the Better Business Bureau in Mississippi.

The invoices are being sent to businesses via fax.
