JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Tougaloo College Eaglets leave the nest soaring to the next level following commencement ceremonies Sunday morning in Jackson.

Rain forced the 2016 graduation ceremonies indoors.

Andrew Lack, the Chairman of NBC News and MSNBC was the commencement speaker.

Lack began visiting Tougaloo during the conference on 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Civil Rights movement and said the college has an extraordinary history and legacy.

147 graduates received degrees in education, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

"I spent quite a bit of time at that conference and then got to know Beverly Hogan over the last couple of years and so proud of the work that she's doing and that the students here are doing. I'm just impressed with the school," said Lack. "I do know that they're producing, the college is producing great young men and women and my only hope is that they give some of that back to Mississippi".

Ezekiel Ross earned a degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in advertising.

He plans to go to graduate school and receive a Master's in Business.

"Today is an important day because it's a milestone in the life of a graduating student. It's a mark of academic achievement, not to mention it's also a time to celebrate into the next endeavor of life," said Ross. "The challenges that graduates have to face today are basically getting through the obstacles of life, but as long as you persevere and maintain and stay focused you will definitely make it through".

Tougaloo College President Dr. Beverly Hogan said more than 60 percent of those receiving degrees Sunday are slated to attend graduate and professional schools.
