JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Progress continues on the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Museum of Mississippi History under construction in downtown Jackson.

Lawmakers passed a bill this year allocating about $16.6 million to complete exhibits and furnish the buildings.

Professional exhibit builders are now in the process of creating the displays. They'll be built out-of-state and installed in the museums starting next March. The designers will be in town over the next several days.

"The contract started yesterday, May 1st. They will come this week for a kick-off meeting. The following week we will have another design firm in town for the kick-off and they will begin construction of the actual pieces of the exhibit off site at their location," says Lucy Allen, the Project Director for the Two Mississippi Museums Project.

The majority of the work on the outside of the museums is complete.

They are located right next to the Department of Archives and History on North Street.

The ribbon cutting is scheduled for December 9th 2017.
