Jackson residents can begin purchasing city-owned properties for a low price through the Neighbors First program.
According to city officials, Monday is the start of the 180-day window residents have to acquire property located on their street. Buyers can purchase empty lots for $10 and abandoned houses for $50.
The program is designed to address blight and help decrease the number of abandoned properties throughout the city.
Only Jackson residents are eligible to participate in the program. For the first 180 days, only homeowners living next to the properties can participate.
The program will then open to neighborhood associations and other residents of the city. The city plans to continue the program until all the properties are sold and back on the tax roll.
