JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi roadways proved deadly over the weekend.

The Highway Patrol responded to several accidents that resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. One victim was on the side of the road, fixing a flat.

Car trouble can happen anywhere, at anytime.

Cars are moving by at 70 miles per hour or faster just a few feet from hitting you. That's why the Mississippi Highway Patrol says putting distance between you and oncoming traffic is crucial in protecting your own life.

MHP Corporal Eric Henry said, "The further right you are from that line you are the less chance you got from being struck by a vehicle that's passing by. But unfortunately, some things you can't solve or get out of the way of. So it's best if you can, if possible, if you can get to the nearest exit that would be the safest thing to do."

It's also recommended you call 9-1-1 or MHP to get an officer on the scene to assist.

Their addition of blue lights will notify other drivers you're there and can help slow them down.

"It's dangerous for law enforcement when we're out there with the lights on," said Corporal Henry. "We still have to be cautious of other drivers that pass by.  Anybody can be distracted. Anybody can be fatigued or about to fall asleep. You got to be careful of your surroundings at all times."

If you come upon a car in an emergency situation on the shoulder, move to the left lane, giving them the space they need and to avoid any collisions.
