Council members grill Siemens rep over billing issues

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

High water bills in the city of Jackson have frustrated residents here for months, like Connie Newman, whose bill tripled in size from last month.

"For a water bill to go from one hundred and something dollars to $414 is outrageous. We don't use that much water," Newman said.

She found out about the bill Monday and paid a visit to the water department.

"What the representative told me was, the reading that we got was an actual reading and they had been undercharging us," Newman said.

For the past seven months, Newman said she had been given an "estimated" bill by the city, an issue that hundreds of residents have been complaining about since Siemens installed new water meters throughout the Capital City back in 2012.

"These estimated and inflated billing issues must be resolved and resolved quickly, and I don't want anymore of the tap dancing and any of that stuff. I want some answers," Councilman De'Keither Stamps said.

Stamps and others tried to get those answers from a Siemens representative Monday in a meeting that lasted three hours.

"I got to be able to trust what they're giving us so our constituents can trust what we're giving them. If we can't trust what they're giving us, that's a real problem, and some people have to be held accountable for that," Stamps said.

Newman said she hopes the meetings will work, but until then, her options are limited.

"Will they get it resolved, and when they do, how much money will we be out of, or will we be reimbursed for all the money we've already spent?" Newman said.

Stamps said they haven't reached a solution at this point, but they will continue to meet with Siemens and hammer out these issues until they're resolved.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
