JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

As the temperatures warm up drivers can expect to share the roads with more motorcycles.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation recognizes "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month," during May.

When motorcycles are involved in accidents they are typically very serious because drivers do not have the protection of a four-wheel vehicle.

According to MDOT in 2014, 4,586 motorcyclists were killed in traffic accidents nationwide.

"It's very disheartening for a family member to come up on a scene because normally like I said when a motorcycle is involved in an accident it is usually serious injuries involved due to not having the structure around them. They're exposed to the elements and the environment and they are the impact zone," says motorcycle safety expert Detective Sergeant Jeff Myers. Myers works for the Jackson Police Department and as an instructor for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

If you're a motorcyclist, make sure your body is fully covered when driving.

Wear a department of transportation compliant helmet and drive in the center of your lane.

Also, make sure you signal before lane changes and turns. Additional safety tips can be found on the Mississippi Department of Transportation at the following link
