WICHITA (JSUTigers.com) – The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission has released the official watch list for the 2016 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com. Jackson State’s Carlos Diaz was among those listed.
Diaz, junior catcher from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, sports a .406 batting average with 44 games played and started. He has recorded 160 at-bats, 47 runs, and 65 hits (12 doubles, two triples, and five homeruns) for 52 RBIs, 96 total bases, a .600 slugging percentage, and a .460 on base percentage. He ranks in the top 50 in the nation in batting average, hits, runs, runs per game, and RBIs per game and ranks 18th in RBIs.
The Johnny Bench Award was created in 2000 to honor college baseball’s top catcher in NCAA Division I play. The award is named after Johnny Bench who many consider to be the best defensive catcher in baseball history.
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 18, 2016. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 6, 2016. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19thAnnual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30, 2016.
