M-Braves announce Southern League All-Star Game alumni appearances

PEARL (MississippiBraves.com) - The Mississippi Braves are excited to announce the lineup of former Atlanta Braves players and Southern League alumni that will be in attendance for the 2016 Southern League All-Star Game and its surrounding festivities. The former players include Steve Avery, Marquis Grissom, Wes Helms and Pete Smith.

Avery (1989, 1996), Helms (1996-97, 1999) and Smith (1986-87, 1990) all played for the Greenville Braves prior to joining the big club. Grissom (1989) played for the Jacksonville Suns when they were affiliated with Montreal. The alumni will attend all events during the two-day celebration. Please see below for a full list of events surrounding the all-star game.

Avery played with the Atlanta Braves from 1990 to 1996. The southpaw also spent time with the Red Sox (1997-98), Reds (1999) and Tigers (2003). Selected third overall by the Braves in 1988 draft, Avery made his MLB debut on June 13, 1990. Avery was the 1991 NLCS MVP, a 1993 NL All-Star, and a member of the A-Braves team that won the 1995 World Series.

A native of Atlanta, Grissom played with the Braves in 1995 and 1996. In his 17-year career, Grissom was selected as a NL All-Star twice (1993-94). He was a member of the Braves 1995 World Series team. Grissom is a four-time Gold Glove Award winner (1993-96), and he was named ALCS MVP in 1997. Grissom spent the 2009 season as first base coach for the Nationals.

Helms spent five seasons with the A-Braves (1998-02). He also spent time with the Brewers (2003-05), Marlins (2006, 2008-11) and Phillies (2007). In 13 Major League seasons, Helms posted a .256 average with 75 home runs and 374 RBI.

Smith played for the Atlanta Braves from 1987 to 1993 and also spent time with the Mets (1994), Reds (1995), Padres (1997-98) and Orioles (1998). Smith was originally selected by the Phillies in the first round of the 1984 draft but was traded to the Braves and made his MLB debut on September 8, 1987. He played with the Braves for seven seasons before he was traded to the Mets.
