JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Governor Phil Bryant has signed Senate Bill 2162, the Airport Takeover Bill, which now changes the governing authority of the Jackson Medger Evers International Airport.

Senator Josh Harkins, who introduced the legislation, was on hand when the governor signed the bill into law Wednesday afternoon.

"I appreciate the governor signing the bill. I think it will have a positive long term impact on the airport and our state," said Harkins.

With the signing of this bill the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority board will increase from five to nine members.

Five members will be Jackson residents.

The regional board will include the adjutant general, the executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority or their designee, a representative from Madison county and one from Rankin county.

Senator John Horhn of Hinds County said the move was not unexpected but further exacerbates the opportunity to build trust between the Capital City and the metro area.

"We'll see what the FAA says about that," said Horhn. "In fact recently the FAA has made rulings in Charleston, South Carolina, that said that essentially any new changing governance, that new governance body has to own the airport, has to own the land, has to own the asset and they're never gonna own that ,"

Jackson Municipal Airport Authority Chairman Dr. Rosie Pridgen released a statement that reads in part:

"This legislation is not business friendly, does not spur economic development and totally disregarded the exemplary management and progress of the fiscally sound enterprise."

She also stated that they will continue to challenge the "hostile takeover."
