JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

State Employees picked up thousands of pounds of litter along Mississippi roadways on Thursday.  It's part of Trash Bash, a yearly effort to clean up the landscape and to set a good example.

Two thousand MDOT employees volunteer for Trash Bash, and about 200 of them target the Jackson Metro area.

MDOT hopes to encourage other volunteer groups to clean up litter as well.

"We encourage groups of all types across the state to volunteer, because we spend roughly $3 million annually as an agency trying to stave off litter along our highways," said MDOT Maintenance Engineer Heath Patterson.

MDOT has been conducting Trash Bash since 1989.
