CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A man tried to sell a stolen truck on Craigslist, but he wasn't expecting the customer he got. The prospective buyer arrested him and put him behind bars. Clinton Police said it was a successful undercover operation.

"To be honest, I think that it's just kind of sad because we have to realize people work hard for what they have," said Kenya Dear

People in the community were shocked after learning a Jackson woman was at a self service car wash on Ellis Avenue at Raymond Road back in April when Clinton Police said a man walked up and stole her white Ford F-150 as she was washing it. Now, that man is behind bars.

"Mr. Marrio Swanagan brought this vehicle in our city and tried to engage in a Craigslist transaction to sell the stolen vehicle," said Clinton Police Chief Ford Hayman. "Our detectives intervened determining the vehicle was stolen."

That's when Chief Hayman said his detectives performed an undercover operation posing as the buyer and catching 36-year-old Marrio Swanagan of Bolton. Now, he's facing felony charges.

"The message is the same, criminals are not welcome here," added Chief Hayman. "We do not want you coming to the city of Clinton to conduct your business. If you do, we will investigate and you will be put in jail."

Chief Hayman recommends residents conduct online transactions at well lit and visible locations, such as the Clinton Police Department. He said it's also critical to check car documents very carefully and he agreed with metro resident Kenya Dear, use common sense.

"You should not feel threatened, but always be aware," said Dear. "Know your surroundings, pay very close attention and always move swiftly."

The original title was in the truck when it was stolen. Swanagan forged his name on the title, according to police. Chief Hayman said the truck has been returned to the owner.
